Taking advantage of IoT

Updated: May 3, 2023

The Rise of IoT devices introduces an influx of IoT data and alarms in facility management.

There is no doubt that today’s facility control rooms are under tremendous pressure to make quick and accurate decisions. Making a quick decision requires correlating various critical data.

The question is, how can we take advantage of IoT to help in making decisions?

First, We need to change our organizational strategy.

Organizational strategies need to address and satisfy the operational challenges.

Invest in the latest technology that can utilize the full potential of IoT data.

Invest in advanced IoT equipment and devices.

Improve the skills of the operators to handle new technology

Prepare for Productivity Paradox

Second, understand How decisions are made in the control room.

When IoT data is used analytically, it can be converted into meaningful insights for the event.

The data analysis of the event can be converted into an automated process.

Real-life example: I received a text message from a utility company warning that “my water consumption during last 48 hours has increased by 51% compared to my average water consumption. Please investigate any internal leakage and take necessary action”.

Informed Decisions are decisions based on real-time data, which is the key to today’s facility control room operations. Facility control rooms need to implement the latest technology to support making informed decisions while optimizing available resources.

At the of an alarm trigger, Operators can get the exact details about the event, including the crucial facts and historical data relating to the current event.

All the recorded actions and alarm data are available can be used for further analysis. (Trend analysis, prediction, or condition-based maintenance)

Third, Quick and accurate Actions with Real-Time Situational Awareness.

Real-time Situational Awareness is fundamental to facility management.

Sensors, IoT devices are useful for providing the live status of remote sites and devices connected.

In addition, live CCTV video of incidents, with a correlation of IoT data, can provide an enhanced level of situational awareness.

This will help them to assess the situation much more easily and accurately to take action.

Forth, Exploit Mobile Technology

A facility management application designed for a mobile device will be a situational awareness tool for security guards and maintenance engineers at remote locations. The mobile app will cut down the incident reporting and response time drastically.

With the remote Alarm Management app at your fingertip, the security guard at a remote site with a smartphone can verify the situation, report some events, or stream live footage direct from their phone camera to the facility control room.

Mobile solutions for Managers ensure that they can see what is happening and don’t have to contact the control room for the status update.

Fifth, Adoption of Artificial Intelligence

The new trends in the facility control room to anticipate the utilization of AI & ML.

Using ML, the system could determine the level of action required. Human judgment will always be the overriding factor for decision-making. However, AI could make those judgments much faster by referring to historical records in a split second for each type of incident and its consequence.

AI can provide Senior Management with very valuable insights into the incident data.

AI-based Predictive analysis provides where, when and why a particular type of event is most likely to occur, based on the analysis of historical data. AI can pick up a specific pattern from a particular site, geographical location etc., for preventative maintenance work.

RAMSYS is one of the flagship software products of ISD and has been built with the most modern Microservice Architecture, which enables RAMsys to provide a consistent user experience across a range of platforms, spanning the web, mobile & IoT etc.

ISD also has a secure development environment certified by TUV-NORD after complying with international standards for information security – ISO 27001:2013.
